Lesson 1C: Join & Forget LISD PROD

Joining LISD PROD

Now that you've got the wifi turned on, let's learn how to join the LISD PROD wireless network. Why this network? At Lampasas ISD, there are three wireless networks: LISD SEC, LISD PROD, and Guest. Each serves a different purpose. In the case of LISD PROD, this wireless network is utilized by the district for devices like Apple TV and Airprint enabled printers. PROD works well with these devices as they can be connected to the network, and maintain a constant connection, without individual users having to log in. In essence, once the password for LISD PROD is generated and entered into your device's wireless settings, in this case, our iPad, the device will remember the password and not prompt users to login the next day or the next week...indeed, once a PROD password is entered, it will continue to work indefintely until Technology forces all users to update their PROD passwords (i.e. generate a new password and re-enter it into their wireless network settings). A few important things to know:

1. LISD PROD is unfiltered, meaning there is no Barracuda content filter in place to screen out inappropriate language, pornography, or other objectionable content.

2. As such, students should NEVER be on PROD, or have use of a device that has a PROD password entered.

3. PROD can be accessed on either district or personal devices...just remember rule #2: if a district device, make sure students do not have use of that device!

Why would you as a teacher want to use PROD instead of SEC for wireless access?

1. Users are not required to re-enter their credentials each day (unlike SEC)

2. On PROD, users can access other wireless devices on PROD, including printers. The most common device teachers will want to connect to is Apple TV, which is used for mirroring your iPad's screen to a laptop (which must also be on PROD) and any connected projector.

3. As PROD is unfiltered, teachers do not need to worry about the YouTube Edu filter blocking them from previewing videos for possible whitelisting. Teachers can also access sites blocked by the content filter for all users, including Pinterest.

Ready to learn how to login to LISD PROD on an iPad? Let's get to it!

STEP 1: As described in Lesson 1A, Turning on Wifi, wake up your iPad and go into your Settings app, then click on wifi...

Picture
STEP 2: Once in the Wifi section of the Settings app, confirm wifi is already turned on (again, it should be if you completed Lesson 1A)...
Picture
STEP 3: With the wifi turned on, your iPad will scan for available networks. At school, you should see all the school networks mentioned above. Click on the row or the word BYOD-Portal (in red below). DO NOT click on the little "i" as this is where you'll go later to "forget" the network...

Not seeing BYOD Portal? Skip to Step 7!

Picture
STEP 4: Connecting to BYOD-Portal should be automatic...you'll get a green checkmark once connected without ever having to enter your credentials.
Picture
STEP 5: Once connected to BYOD-Portal, press the home button to get out of the Settings app and go into the Safari App (pictured below). See Lesson 1A for directions on using the Home button and/or finding the Safari app.
Picture
STEP 6: Sometimes the WLAN Portal page we're looking for just opens on it's own (see STEP 7 to see what it looks like). Most of the time, we need to click on the web address bar and type in something short and sweet like www.cnn.com and hit "Go" to load the page.
Picture
STEP 7: When you're where you need to be, you'll see this screen below. Alternatively, you can also join LISD SEC (see Lesson 1B) and manually type in this web address: https://172.16.254.23/activate.  Note: You must already be connected to LISD SEC and you must type this web address in exactly as it appears!
Picture
STEP 8: Enter the same credentials you would normally use to log in to your classroom computer and click "Log In"...

Ex. User Name: Folkse

Password: 123456

Picture
STEP 9: You will see your iPad go through a series of screens...
Picture
Picture
STEP 10: Until finally, you're taken out of Safari and into your Settings app, which will ask you if you want to install the Zero-IT Activation profile (HINT: Yes you do! HIT INSTALL!)
Picture
From there you'll be asked to confirm you want to install. hit "Install Now"
Picture
STEP 11: You'll then get a confirmation that the Zero-IT Activation profile was installed correctly. Just click "Done"
Picture
STEP 12: At this point, you'll be taken out of the Settings app and back into Safari. However, to confirm you are able to connect to LISD PROD, go back into your Settings - Wifi, and click on the word or row for LISD PROD. You'll see it takes a moment to connect...
Picture
Then you should get a green checkmark indicating you've successfully connected to LISD PROD.
Picture
Well done! You should now be able to connect to LISD PROD anytime you are within range of the school's wifi network. Be sure to check your Settings - Wifi everyday you come to school to identify the wireless network you've connected to...remember, PROD is unfiltered (use with caution around students!) and SEC is filtered and much safer in terms of ensuring only appropriate content gets through.

So now that you've connected to LISD PROD, let's see how you disconnect from or forget LISD PROD!

Forgetting LISD PROD

Why? There aren't many times when you'll want to "forget" or sign out of the wifi if you're using your own personal device, or a device assigned to you by the school because you are the only user of that device.  Sometimes Technology needs to reset all PROD passwords so users are forced to generate new ones.  As users are required to enter their credentials at the time of generating a PROD password (above), forcing a reset helps Technology ensure only staff are on PROD. Steps are pretty simple, so let's take a look.

STEP 1: Go into your Settings app, then click on General. Then scroll all the way down to the bottom where you'll see a section called "Profiles." Click on the profiles row or the little arrow over option...

Note: If you don't have any installed profiles, you won't have a section called Profiles...which means the Zero-IT Activation Profile isn't installed and you've already forgotten (or never added) LISD PROD.

Picture
STEP 2: Click on the Zero-IT Activation profile row or the over arrow..
Picture
STEP 3: Click "Remove"
Picture
STEP 4: Confirm you want to remove and enter your iPad's passcode if you have one in place...
Picture
Picture
You're done! You should no longer see a checkmark next to LISD PROD, and you should be prompted for a password if you click on LISD PROD. Directions for generating that password are above.
