Lesson 1E: Access & Log into the Barracuda Content FilterIntroduction: As indicated in Lesson 1D, there are lots of signs Barracuda is blocking you and your apps from communicating with other servers/computers outside the school's network. So how do you keep that from happening in the first place? How do you fix it if it does happen and you do get an error?  This is the focus of this lesson.

STEP 1: Avoid the problem in the first place by correctly joining the school's wifi AND loading a fresh new page in Safari. See Lesson 1A.

STEP 2: If you're already seeing the signs Barracuda is blocking you...make sure you're connected to the school's wifi network, specifically, LISD SEC.

A wifi conection is indicated from almost anywhere by the little radar-looking icon in the top left-hand corner of your screen...if you're within an app, and the app is taking up all your screen real estate (i.e. you can't see the top left corner of your iPad's screen), click on the Home button to exit the app and see your wifi icon/time/battery charge levels etc.

Picture
Note: the radar-looking wifi icon only indicates you're connected to a wifi network. It doesn't indicate which wifi, or indicate if Barracuda needs you to login to it as well. To see which wifi you're connected to, go into your Settings, then click on Wifi, then see what wifi network has the checkmark indicating you're connected.

STEP 3: Once you've confirmed you're connected to LISD SEC, it's time to load a fresh new page in the Safari Web Browser. If you're not on the home screen yet, go ahead and click the Home button, then open up the Safari web browser app...

Once in Safari, simply click on the address bar/search bar and manually type an entire URL or web address starting with "www" (Ex. www.cnn.com).
Picture
Note: Do not let autocomplete finish the typing for you...you type the whole thing! This is to prevent a cached or temporarily saved web page from opening up and tricking you into thinking you're good to go with Barracuda. You need a fresh, new page to load. CNN has a last updated timestamp right on their home page to help you confirm it is a fresh new page you loaded and not a "cached" page.
Picture
STEP 4: One of two things will happen when you try to load a fresh new page in Safari.

(1) The page loads fine and you now know you're good to go with Barracuda...

(2) The Barracuda login screen pops up and you enter your school network credentials (the same credentials you use for logging in to a school computer), and then the fresh new page loads...

NOTE: If Barracuda does not accept your school network credentials, you'll need to contact Technology for troubleshooting!

STEP 5: Now that you've made sure you're connected to LISD SEC, and you've loaded a fresh new web page in Safari, it's time to "force close" the app that was blocked by Barracuda, and restart it. Forcing an app to close and shut down completely is as simple as double-clicking the home button (shown above) while your iPad is on, then swiping up on the app you wish to close. This motion forces it to shut down, so when you restart the app, it tries to connect again to whatever it needs to...this time, without Barracuda getting in the way.  Though the app you're trying to shut down will likely be different from the one I use for illustration purposes below, this video might help you visualize the process.

STEP 6: Now that you've forced the app to close, restart the app and it will connect with whatever it needs to online just fine!

Well done! Review Module 1 if you need to, but I think you're ready for Module 2!
