While I plan to share some of what Shea has done in these other areas soon, today we'll take a look at some of the benefits to using SMART Response for formative and summative assessments.
Feature Overview: SMART Response provides teachers with a great way to gain valuable feedback from all students, even those who wouldn't normally volunteer to answer questions in class. SMART Response in it's most basic form is a student response system, where students use "clickers" to answer questions, be these formative or summative in nature. There are various modes available to teachers, including anonymous and class mode (which requires a sign in to any clicker using a student ID), and teachers can make the questions self-paced (ideal for summative assessments) or control the pacing to ensure all students are at the same place at the same time (ideal for formative assessments). SMART Response integrates seamlessly with SMART notebook software, so teachers can insert questions and analyze the results right within their Notebook presentation (as you can see Shea doing below with her map, student response data pie chart, and question).
Pros: SMART Response will give you immediate feedback and data to accurately what your students get and don't get. It works beautifully with SMART Notebook, is easy to use, increases student engagement and accountability, and saves you time grading when used as a summative assessment tool. By planning out your checks for understanding and building them straight into your SMART lesson plans, you can determine with a much higher degree of accuracy if your students are truly getting it and ready to move on to the next step in the lesson.
Cons: While using SMART Response for anonymous mode is quite easy and quick to set up, using SMART Response in class mode requires a little bit of setup: classes and students must be set up and entered. While pulling this data from Skyward is not too difficult, it can be tricky getting the formatting just right.
The good news: Lori and I have volunteered to come in and set up your Smart Response classes and students for you! All you have to do is let us know you're ready! What are you waiting for !?!
